A Writer's Workshop FREEBIE!

This coming year I really want to improve my writing lessons and activities.  Often times I find myself getting impatient with the writing process.  Let's just get real... it's a lot easier for me to edit a paper than it is to teach a student how to edit.  But, that's just because I haven't done the best job at training my students how to edit/revise their own writing.  So, this year I promise to do better!! :)

To jumpstart my writing lessons, I plan on having my kiddos make this little pencil booklet craftivity that we will keep to reference throughout the year.  This won't be something that we finish in one day, but as we are doing our mini-lessons throughout the first few weeks of school, we will complete the booklet pages to serve as writing reminders!

You can grab this freebie up {HERE}

Everything you will need is included in the download!
 Booklet pages...

 Pencil templates:

If you browse my past blog posts, you will see that we do A LOT of writing in class, so I'm hopeful that focusing more on the actual writing skills will help my kids oodles and oodles!

Do you have any engaging writing lessons that have been a hit in your class?  I'd love to hear about them!

Editing certainly is something that is difficult to teach. I found that the easiest way for them to edit is to read it to me, and while they are reading they find a lot of their mistakes. I also have them do a lot of peer editing and that seems to help. My goal this year is to get writer's workshop going in a more structured way. Thanks for this cute freebie!

Really good point about teaching them how to do it...we find the same thing in first grade. Takes sooooo long sometimes...But, this is such a great lil' resource for them and us! Thanks for sharing your creativity.

Thank you for sharing! One of the best resources I have come across and use all the time in my second grade classroom is Mentor Texts: Teaching writing through children's literature K-6 by Lynn R. Dorfman and Rose Capelli. You might also be interested in a narrative writing project I posted about on my blog http://makelearningcontagious.blogspot.com/2012/04/personal-narrative-project.html. The post is kind of funky because I couldn't seem to bring a few of the pages up where I wanted them so you have to scroll down a little to see the whole thing. Thanks again for sharing!

This is great. Have you ever checked out Learning Headquarters? Its a writing program that we use at my schooland its great for teaching the writing process, but I throw my Thinking Maps into it as well. Honestly, for first graders they aren't really ready to edit on their own until about March. I totally think second graders could start the year doing it!

I LOVE teaching writing. I did a series on how I implement Step-Up-to-Writing on my blog. Once the kiddos get the basics down to a routine, it becomes so much easier to keep them engaged in writing.

This little booklet is awesome. I love it. My kids will, too. THANKS!!

Hi! I couldn't figure out how to email you without commenting on your post! I have been a long time follower of your blog (since I started my "Adventures of a Future Teacher" blog during my senior year of college. Well, I will be teaching 2nd grade this coming August and needed some advice. I thought you would be the perfect teacher to ask. I am currently working on my classroom library. I have a lot of books, but am struggling to find quality literature that is on grade level for the beginning of the year 2nd grade. My school uses AR very heavily, so I am leveling with that system. I was wondering if you could suggest some books that are in the J,K.. 2.0,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4 range. Also, I will be teaching in a rather affluent community where nearly all children are performing on or above grade level. How high should my classroom library go in terms of reading level?

Thanks for your advice.. I really, really appreciate and look forward to continuing to use your blog and a great resource for me as a first year, 2nd grade teacher!

Hi there
I model writing everyday in front of them and purposefully make mistakes. I concentrate on one thing at a time. Say missing capitals or other punctuation, beginning sentences the same way, common spelling errors (based on our word wall words) etc. I find using the Write Traits program especially helpful. But again the main thing is writing in front of them. Having them help out with the content and editing is invaluable.
